Home sharing is not only for low-income people, nor exclusively accessible to the elderly.

Home sharing can provide a perfect housing alternative for many different groups (e.g. recently unemployed homeowners, widowed or divorced individuals, married couples, single parents, college students, pre-retirement and recently retired singles.  All parties must be willing to exchange housing for financial stability.


Benefits to Individuals;



For a household on a tight budget, S.A.G.A’s Homesharing program is a “home grown” economic and home affordability stimulus that may reduce the cost of housing by $2500 or more per year
                                                        

 

Independence/Security & Companionship;

For older adults who need basic assistance to remain in their home a housemate can provide services such as cleaning, cooking, shopping, yard work, and/or transportation in exchange for part or all of the rent.

By facilitating prolonged independent living arrangements, HOME SHARING can prevent premature institutionalization and reduce the demand for more costly formal supports such as assisted living and long-term care facilities

Offers a unique form of affordable housing by utilizing the current stock to a greater capacity.

By utilizing the current housing stock to a greater capacity, HOME SHARING expands the number of affordable housing units without the exorbitant costs associated with building new housing or rehabilitation.  HOME SHARING is especially practical in urban/surburban settings that typically offer few options for new affordable housing units.

HOME SHARING programs also encourage community and property stabilization by avoiding an untimely foreclosure, keeping property
on the tax role.

Homeowners who can remain in their homes remain viable members of the community for longer periods.
